a soft breeze stirs the snow of cherry blossoms from the canopy of ancient trees, in a riot of full bloom.
we are enveloped in sweet, fresh intoxicating fragrance – blossoms on our faces and at our feet. in a collective celebration of fleeting beauty, we wander among the revelers at the edge of the imperial palace moat. in the night sky the trees are washed in brilliant light - a luminous pink ceiling of a million blooms.
this fleeting instant of striking beauty remains with me, unforgettable.
in studying this concept “aware” — pronounced “ah wah re”, i return to that moment. a gift from my client – the president of the leading retail company that had put their faith in us to design a legacy project. he swept me away from hours and days of non-stop design, presentations, and meetings to experience this moment.
after working in japan for many years, this was the night i became partly japanese. this was the instant that i felt the meaning of mono no aware – the power of fleeting beauty, the power of an instant, an instant of a thousand sighs.
