the scent of summer’s end

i wished to capture the smell of today in a bottle. inhaling,
i was transported back in time to my earliest childhood.
i became  that child, in breathing that scent.
the slight cool crispness, freshly harvested earth, grasses gone to seed,
after the rain of the night, heated by the sun at just that angle –
and all the other magical notes, the alchemy of the fragrance that is only this moment.
and that moment of being that echoed forward to today.

  1. I go weekly to the fern house of the Garfield Park Conservatory in Chicago. I stand within and inhale the thick, sweet, oxygen-rich air–and wonder. I listen to the melody of the waterfalls, high on real oxygen (missing, mostly, in the Chicago atmosphere) and wonder how to recreate this high in my own home. I smile and am grateful to be transported back to a time when mother nature filled our senses to the brim, no strings attached. I’m usually rejuvinated for another week. Scent and ascent, higher than a bird. Sue B

    • lovely idea, and place, a fern house – it seems like once a week is not enough. we are missing that scent, sense, in our everyday experience, sensory deprivation is draining the soul. nature is always a refill. seeking ways to live closer to, within, the natural environment we evolved to thrive in. thank you for your inspiration. dac.
